Application Process

The process of applying for Social Security Disability benefits is often long and complicated. There are four stages to the process, and while some applicants go through just one stage before being approved, others must go through all four before being approved or denied for benefits.

Click on the links to the left for a more detailed description of each stage.

Stage 4: Appeals Council

When will I receive a decision?

  • 12 to 18 months on average

What Happens during this stage?

  • An Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) will review the decision to determine whether your claim was adjudicated properly.
  • The Judge will either reverse or confirm the decision of the ALJ, or will remand your case back to the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review (ODAR) for further review.
